I am really excited about learning how to make my own website in my web design class this semester. It is perfect timing. I am a senior, about to throw myself out into the real world of mass communication and journalism, and it is important that I have the skills to work in the media profession.
Well, I haven’t even purchased my domain name yet, and I have already managed to make an awkward joke out of this task.
I was talking on the phone with my dad and we were trying to come up with names for my website. He kept wanting http://www.JLspielvogel.com because the “J” and the “L” are my initials, with my last name – yah, clever…and I kept resisting, saying “No, Dad. I told you, I want it to be just www dot Jessie Spielvogel dot com. When I said that, a lightbulb went off in my head. “Oh! How about justjessie.com? How cute would that be? Well, I went to see if it was available by typing it into my trusty new Macbook Pro browser, and, much to my dismay, I was greeted with a lovely adults-only site showing lots of ‘female parts’ displayed across my screen.
I think it is safe to say I will not be using http://www.JustJessie.com
Even after I told my dad that my dream domain name was actually a porn site, he still suggested, “well, how about you use http://www.just-jessie.com, you know…with a hyphen.” Yep. Great idea! I can see it now – my future employer going to check out my own personal homemade website, forgetting to include the hyphen, and getting a great first impression of me and my “website” right off the bat. Pass.
So, to be on the safe side, I’ll just use my full name. I found out that http://www.JessieSpielvogel.com is, in fact, available. I am surprised…Jessie Spielvogel is such a common name, I didn’t think I would get so lucky.
